Saint-Cirq-Lapopie was voted as the most popular village in France in 2012. It lies against a cliff and overlooks the valley of the Lot. Once Richard the Lionheart conquered this strategically located village, and afterwards it swapped hands between the French and the English many times. In the 20th century artists, especially surrealists, flooded the village, which has 13 historic monuments and a number of fascinating exhibition spaces.
