Domme is a bastide that was founded in 1281 by King Philip the Bold. A bastide is a walled fortress, and here in Domme a large part of the city walls and three of the city gates still stand. The town is right on the Dordogne, albeit at a height of 150 meters above the river. Once of strategic importance, today tourism reigns.
